Home Recording Equipment - What Is An Audio Interface?

!±8± Home Recording Equipment - What Is An Audio Interface?

When recording audio on your computer, this audio needs to be converted from sound (air molecules bouncing around and crashing into each other) into data that a computer can work with called digital audio. The hardware that does this "analog-to-digital" (A-to-D) conversion is called an audio interface. The most basic form of this is the humble sound card built into most computers. These can be noisy and not actually very good at the conversion process at all. In most cases the term audio interface refers these days to an external box that connects (usually via USB) to your computer. Examples include the M-Audio Fast Track, the Lexicon Alpha and Omega models, and the PreSonus Audio Box. There are lots more than these, starting at around for 1 or 2 inputs, going up in cost, quality and number of inputs available into four figures.

Also, recently USB mics have become technologically advanced enough to incorporate the A-to-B conversion themselves. This eliminates both the need for the audio interface "box" or sound card microphone input. There are a range of good quality USB mics on the market including the Samson G Track, Blue Yeti, and the Samson Q1U, ranging in price from around up to around 0 depending on the quality of the capsule and converters on board. These microphones are amazingly inexpensive considering what they can do, and as they avoid the need for extra costly equipment. They can be ideal for the folks who just want to record single track audio or voice overs with maybe some production music in the background.

There are several USB mics of fantastic quality which you can get for less than 0, which is a sound (no pun intended) investment considering you're aim is to produce professional sounding audio recordings at the lowest cost (or at least I think it should be). These mics are hard-wearing, long-lasting and a fantastic investment if you are just setting out on a career in the voiceover or music industry.

There are a couple of factors you should consider if you are purchasing an audio interface, including:

How many inputs do you need? Consider what type of audio you're going to be recording and think about the number of inputs you will need. The price increases with the number of inputs. If you're a singer-songwriter-type, for example you'll almost certainly want an interface with two microphone preamp inputs so you can simultaneously record, say, your vocals and guitar. If you're going to utilize a drum kit rather than synthesized drums, or you want to record an entire band at once, you will need more inputs for things like snare, bass, kick and cymbals, other guitars, other vocals, etc.

Do you need Pro Tools compatibility? Pro Tools is widely regarded as the industry standard in music recording software, and not very many interfaces are compatible with Pro Tools. You'll want to look into M-Audio's M-Powered line of interfaces like the M-box, Fast Track Pro, or Mobile Pre. These also usually come bundled with a stripped-down version of Pro Tools such as Pro Tools SE. Let me state here, however, that Pro Tools is definitely NOT mandatory, even if it is considered the industry standard. If you aren't planning to have multiple studios working on your projects, all with their own set-ups, then compatibility is not an issue.

Your audio interface, in whatever form, is essential for recording your audio tracks. There are a range of audio interfaces of all sizes so you can record from single tracks to full orchestras! As we always say at Home Brew Audio, let you needs drive your gear purchasing decisions. Whatever your needs are there is an audio interface out there to meet them.

Blue Yeti Mic Review

My initial review of the Blue Yeti USB microphone. Realize that I don't have it placed in the optimal location to really show off it's audio quality. I am moving it around to show some of its features and this of course will impact the actual quality and variability of the audio. www.bluemic.com

Is it Better to Buy the Blue Microphones Snowball Mic Online Or at the Store?

!±8± Is it Better to Buy the Blue Microphones Snowball Mic Online Or at the Store?

The Blue Microphones Snowball USB Condenser Mic is the newest tool in home recording mastery. This is a plug and play microphone, meaning that all you need is a simple USB chord and either a PC or a Mac. Individuals who understand what a great investment this is still naturally want to get the best deal possible. But does this mean you should buy your Blue Snowball online or at a "real-world" retailer?

The fact of the matter is that it is almost always better to buy online. You're virtually guaranteed to find a better deal, as a physical retail outlet is in competition with all the other stores of its kind in your local area, whereas an online store is in competition with hundreds of similar outlets worldwide!

As the competition goes up, the prices go down... in some cases, way down! Buying your Snowball USB Condenser Mic at a store (especially if you pay sales tax in your state) is honestly just throwing your money away. I can almost hear you now. "But what about shipping?"

Again, we're talking about a competitive market here, and companies are not only slashing prices (that sounds so infomercial-esque!) by like 30 to 50 percent, they're also offering FREE shipping as an incentive to make you their customer.

This is great news for you, the consumer, because you can simply sit in one location and shop to your heart's content until you find a deal that inspires you to pull out that credit card.

You can literally have your Blue Microphones USB Snowball shipped free to your door and begin using it to immediately start doing podcasts, recording vocals, or capturing sweet guitar licks! Oh, another note about this mic is that you can literally take it, along with your laptop, out to the woods or a park and record in nature! It's a very cool mic, for sure.

So other than maybe missing out on having a captivating conversation with your local instrument dealer and listening to "the next big thing" wail away on a guitar he or she can't afford, there's really no comparison between getting your Snowball mic online or offline.

Online wins 100% of the time - unless you can find a used USB Blue Snowball at a yard sale or thrift shop, which is obviously far from likely... not to mention potentially kind of shady.

Well, I wish you the best in your microphone shopping adventures. I hope this has helped!

Audio Technica AT2020 USB Microphone Review!

!±8± Audio Technica AT2020 USB Microphone Review!

One of the more popular USB microphones today is the AT2020 by Audio Technica. This side-address cardioid condenser has received critical acclaim, and as always, I have read dozens of customer reviews to find common themes to share with my readers. Here's what I found:

This is a usb microphone, which if you're unfamiliar with this type of instrument, is simply a mic that needs no xlr device to run through. You can simply connect it via your PC or Mac's USB port, perform a few simple configurations, and begin using it immediately!

While at first thought it may seem that this would reduce the quality (as with most shortcuts), customer after customer compares the AT2020 Audio Technica mic to non-USB microphones that cost nearly five times as much!

This microphone has a great range, and is often used for not only vocals, but for instrument recording, podcasts, sound production, interviews, and voiceovers.

It can capture everything from subtle whispers to all-out screamcore; from sounds of a natural meadow to the drama of breaking glass or screeching tires... with very little peaking (if well configured, obviously).

Almost every Audio Technica AT2020 USB review I've read delivers the same message: The AT2020 has a surprisingly professional sound for such an inexpensive instrument.

It's fully powered and, as already stated, operates solely from a usb chord, meaning that this is the perfect microphone for anyone on a budget, as there is no need to buy additional equipment. A mic, a USB chord, and your computer (which I'm assuming you have access to if you're reading this right now) are all you need!

The Audio Technica AT2020 USB Mic has a cardioid polar pattern that reduces the pickup of sounds from the sides and rear, improving isolation of the desired sound source. It captures exactly what you want it to capture, and little else.

Because I have been unable to find a legitimate negative review (almost every Audio Technica AT2020 USB review at Amazon gives the microphone a 5 out of 5 rating), I would have to put this microphone very high up on my list of all usb microphones in the under 200 dollar range.

Perhaps only the Marshall MXL 007 USB receives higher marks.

If you decide that this is the microphone for you, it does come with a few little perks you should be aware of. There are actually resources available that can get this microphone delivered right to your front door for a near 60% discount! You can also receive free shipping, a free tripod desk stand, pivoting stand mount, USB cable, and storage pouch.

My overall impression of the Audio Technica AT2020 USB Microphone is that it is a near professional quality "fan favorite" that is probably excellent for the serious home musician, voice actor, or again, any value-conscious consumer.

Professional artists with an extremely keen ear are probably better off spending more on a true studio condenser. Even for this individual, however, the Audio Technica AT2020 USB could be a fun toy that they could use to record in nature, on vacation, in a hotel, or even driving around in their own vehicle!

Exceptional microphone for the money.
